Clothing Guide for Traveling to Tibet (January–December)

🙋 Many friends want to know about the #TibetTravelClothingGuide.
Today, I’ve organized a detailed note covering monthly temperatures across Tibet and what to wear in different seasons. Take notes and save this guide! 💥

🏞️ Climate Overview

Because Tibet is located on a high plateau, its climate differs greatly from inland China.
In general, Tibet’s temperatures can be divided into two main periods:

  • April to October: Temperatures range from 9–24°C (48–75°F).
This is the best time for tourism in Tibet — the weather is pleasant and comfortable for travel.
  • November to March: This is Tibet’s winter, with average temperatures around –14 to 13°C (7–55°F).
It’s the low travel season, and while snow may sometimes block roads, the scenery is exceptionally stunning.Clothing Guide for Traveling to Tibet (January–December)

💢 What to Wear in Different Seasons

Spring (March–May)Nyingchi Peach Blossom Season

As the snow melts, a chill still lingers in the air, but this is the best time to see peach blossoms in Nyingchi.
Average temperatures in major tourist areas are around 10°C (50°F) or higher.

Recommended clothing:
Suits, jackets, windbreakers, casual wear, sweaters, fleece, down jackets — all are suitable for warmth.
If it’s sunny, outdoor temperatures will feel much warmer during the day.Clothing Guide for Traveling to Tibet (January–December)

Summer (June–August)Is It Cold in Tibet in Summer? Should You Bring a Down Jacket?

Summer marks the peak travel season. Sunshine is strong, temperatures are comfortable.
In lower-altitude areas like Lhasa, days can feel quite warm — long-sleeved T-shirts and casual pants are enough.
However, since the temperature difference between day and night is large, pack a few warmer layers for the evenings.
If you plan to visit high-altitude regions, bring sweaters and down jackets, as nighttime temperatures can drop below freezing.

🌞 Travel tip:
Bring sunscreen clothing, a sun hat, and sunglasses.
Summer is also the rainy season, so a portable raincoat or umbrella is essential.

Autumn (September–November)Golden Tibet

Autumn in Tibet is absolutely picturesque. Along the highway from Lhasa to Shigatse, the golden barley fields wave like golden seas.

Clothing tip:
Pack warm outerwear, thicker pants, and thermal underwear.
Daytime is mild, but nights are cold — stay indoors after dark if possible.
If you’re heading to high-altitude areas such as Everest Base Camp or Ngari, bring thermal wear, fleece pants, thick sweaters, and heavy down jackets, as nighttime temperatures can drop below –10°C (14°F).Clothing Guide for Traveling to Tibet (January–December)

Winter (December–February)Is It Worth Visiting Tibet in Winter? What to Wear?

Yes, you can travel to Tibet in winter!
Bring layered warm clothing such as fleece, shell jackets, thick down coats, padded pants, insulated shoes, hats, gloves, and face masks.

During the daytime, it’s warm enough to wear light jackets while sunbathing at Jokhang Temple Square.
But mornings and evenings are quite cold — layer a sweater and down jacket.
For pants, thick sweatpants plus thermal leggings are recommended.
Opt for hard-soled winter shoes to keep your feet warm and sturdy on icy ground.
